Grand Rapids’ most heart-centered trauma therapy, grounded in cutting-edge care.

I see your heart, and I know it’s hurting ❤️‍🩹

With everything going on in the world today, it can feel nearly impossible to take a moment to stop, breathe, and ground yourself into the present moment.

Our minds and bodies are constantly pulled into a heightened state of fight, flight, and freeze—the news is never ending, our daily responsibilities pile up one on top of another, and we’re asked to keep going with a smile on our faces and a skip in our step. Like nothing is wrong. Like the world isn’t completely and utterly different from the one we knew growing up.

Not here, though.

At Hinterland Counseling, we slow down. Way down. We give your mind and body a place to exhale deeply, completely. We make room for your story to emerge without force or judgment. We give space to the parts of you that have needed to stay hidden for survival. We let your mind and body process your emotions through somatic and mindfulness-based experiences, rather than mentalizing or cognitive-behavioral techniques.

Here, we honor the fact that healing doesn’t come in a neatly-wrapped package with a bow on top. It’s not a surface-level experiment, but a depth-seeking experience. And it’s an experience that is taken one single step at a time—together.

Hey, I’m meg, your therapist at Hinterland Counseling.

A hinterland is defined “an area lying beyond what is visible or known.” I couldn’t think of a better way to describe the beautiful, vast expanses of the human psyche than this: a collection of areas unknown containing stories, feelings, emotions, words, memories, sensations, and connections, all forming paths that converge at a unified center—at the Core of who we are.

I’ve been fascinated by the human mind since I was young, and our human capacity for healing has never ceased to amaze me. In my time as a therapist, I’ve had the honor of companioning countless clients through their darkest moments as they journey toward a brighter vision for themselves, their future, and the lives they want to lead.

FAQs for Therapy in Grand Rapids

  • At Hinterland Counseling, I base my care for clients on appropriate pacing for your unique nervous system. This often means slowing down, turning inward, grounding, and building inner resources before proceeding with any form of trauma processing.

My work as a therapist is built on the principle of uncertainty, as well as the core value of Do No Harm. I never assume to know what is best for you without consulting you first, nor do I assume to be the expert on who you are. Rather, I act as a guide and companion through this next phase of your healing.

My approach includes evidence-based therapies such as EMDR, Brainspotting, and Pain Reprocessing Therapy, and is grounded in values of collaboration, communication, transparency, respect for all, and respect for your autonomy.

  • Trauma therapy is any type of therapy that helps you heal from difficult, traumatic, or challenging past life events. This can be a single traumatic incident, such as a car accident, an assault, a major surgery, or an illness or injury. It can also be chronic or developmental traumas sustained during childhood, such as repeated abuse, neglect, witnessing the abuse of a caregiver, having a caregiver affected by substance use or mental health problems, growing up in poverty or violence, or any other experience that caused you to feel consistently unsafe or unwanted as a child.

There are many types of trauma therapy available. At Hinterland Counseling, we provide EMDR and Brainspotting therapy to help process trauma. These therapies use the natural healing power of both the brain and the body to assist your nervous system healing.

  • Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT) is a type of therapy that uses mind-body approaches to help you manage chronic pain. PRT is based on neuroscience, and is structured in a way to retrain the brain to stop sending chronic pain signals, especially where there is no longer an ongoing injury.

PRT helps clients better understand that while their pain is very real, it is driven by the brain misinterpreting safe physical signals as dangerous. In PRT we learn to shift out of the fear-pain, toward a cycle of feeling safer in our bodies by changing our thoughts and emotions, and focusing on pleasant sensations (somatic tracking).

PRT aims to break the frustrating cycle of chronic pain. For many clients, this leads to symptom reduction, reduced disability, and improved function, with studies showing promising success rates for treating neuroplastic pain.
